An IEEE student branch is an IEEE organization for students and undergraduates. Within a student branch of IEEE, volunteering and being a part of "Advancing Technology for Humanity" opens up avenues to gain experience and exposure in diverse technological fields. IEEE and its members inspire the community to innovate for a better tomorrow through its conferences and professional and educational activities.

Student Branches provide an opportunity for IEEE Student Members to begin networking in their areas of interest and future profession. Globally, there are over 3,000 Student Branches spread across more than 100 countries. Through its global membership, IEEE is a leading authority in areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics. Presently there are 6 IEEE Student branches in Sri Lanka. They are University of Moratuwa, University of Peradeniya, University of Ruhuna, University of Colombo School of Computing, Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology and General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.

IEEE University of Moratuwa Student Branch strives to create an atmosphere of technology for the Engineers to-be of the University of Moratuwa. Undergraduates from both the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Information Technology volunteer in this representative body of the world’s most reputed professional body for Engineering with the vision of serving humanity through technology. Global, national and university level events and competitions are regularly organized and coordinated within the University of Moratuwa premises by the student branch. IEEEXtreme 24 hour Programming Competition and IEEE Electronics Design Competition are examples.
